MODERN HARRIS TWEED PRODUCTS
About Island Stitches
I'm Joan and I was born and bred in Scalpay in Harris. When my Dad wasn't out fishing, I grew up listening to him weaving on the Hattersley Loom - which is still part of the family 40 years later. Thankfully, he taught me how to knit - which came in handy later on in life when I'd taught myself to sew!
I started making lampshades and used our local gin bottles to make lamp and shade sets for friends in January 2017. Things grew quickly and I moved my sewing machines, embroidery machine, tweed and wool out of the garden shed and up to the island's main town of Tarbert, where I'm now based - and the rest, as they say, is history!
I love working with the tweed and wool that is so much part of the island's heritage.
